(No, They actually worked for it) I’ve always loved hearing people say this about others. It gives me a great chance to tell them it’s just a total load of B.S. A leader is not born, a leader works hard to achieve their status and in the process, gain the respect of those around them. We all have it in us to become a leader of some sorts, we just have to be willing to put in the hard work. Anyone can be a boss or manager, they are a dime a dozen, but only a few of us have the drive in us to reach the status of leader. I know some will say that there are those who have been given the tools to reach that status, but giving someone the tools and having the drive and ambition to implement them are 2 different things. How many time have you heard of company’s being handed down to siblings only to go broke within a short while. It’s not that the person taking over didn’t have the tools to succeed, it’s usually because they didn’t have the willingness to do whatever it took to make it succeed like their predecessor did.
I had a couple of examples from my own life to put in this post from my military days, but they would make this post too long, so I’ll use them at a later date. I will leave you with the moral of this post: The only difference between a regular person and a leader is excuses. In this day and age with the availability of the internet we all have the ability to improve ourselves daily. It’s every person’s choice, you can either watch cat videos or a video on becoming more productive, read a romance novel or an autobiography on a great person’s life Watch a reality show on T.V. or spend that time discovering a new hobby… I could go on and on but you get the point. It all comes down to the choices we make, no matter what our situation is right now. We all need to work harder, if not to be a leader, then to be better human beings. I’ll leave you with a saying my father used to always say to me. “You can be the wolf or the sheep in this life. There’s a lot of sheep out there but not a lot of wolves”. Years later when I was in the Infantry I heard one that our Major used to tell all his commanders and it has really stuck with me. “There are wolves that lead sheep, then there are wolves that lead wolves”. Do you have it in you to be a leader? That doesn’t mean a leader of a company or country. It could be a leader in your field of work, your community or even just in your own circle of friends.
