Oh, those people who think they are so productive because they can multitask. I think that multitasking is just a way of doing more than one thing at a time half assed. Studies that have been done over the last forty years have proven than the human brain has the ability to perform multiple simple tasks (such as talking on the phone and typing), but when it comes to more complex tasks there becomes a bottleneck in the brain and signals end up getting scrambled. I’ll use an example from my own life to show how trying to do too many things at one time just sets you up for failure or if completed it’s just not the best work you could possibly do.
There is a lady that I work with who has worked for the company for 15 years or so. She always has about 10 different projects on the go at one time, but always ends up leaving most of them partially completed, they do get finished because the rest of us step in and finish them off for her or get on her to get the job finished. Her response is that she is always too busy. I now call her 50 cent (no not the rapper, it’s short for 50 percent because that’s about how much she gets done). I did tell here ahead of time that I’d be calling her that from now on and her response was “That’s ok I know you guys will help me out”. I will defend her in ways, not here to put people down, she does bring value to the company in other ways, she is a big asset and knows way more than any of the other employees including myself. So, the moral here is: OK people “STOP BEING BUSY AND START BEING PRODUCTIVE”. If you have multiple things to get done at work or in your personal life then pick a few of the most important ones that you want to work on each day. Do them separate and try to do the most important one earliest in the day when your brain is at its highest functioning peak. In our next post, we will talk about Customer Service in the post “Where Did The Great Customer Service Go?” If you have something that you see in everyday life that just wants you to shake your head or actually shake the person and say enough is enough, then we’d love to hear from you, you can write it anonymously if you’d like, just try to keep it politically correct. We are not here to bash anyone, just trying to get them understand that maybe if life is always negative then it’s time to change some things in your life to make it better. Thank you. Science has proven over and over our brains just can't handle multi tasking as effectively as focusing on tasks for shorter periods of time. It's been shown its the best way to master productivity. Thank you for pointing out the errors of multi-tasking! It's just not all that its cracked up to be!!
